The Federation is the organisation for all museum workers, both paid and voluntary in Wales. It exists to promote good practice in the museums and galleries across the country and to provide a forum for discussion of museum issues affecting members.

The Federation arranges regular seminars and lectures and also produces its own newsletter, . We organise training days, run an e-mail group for help and discussion and can grant aid personal research by museum workers through the Cefni Barnett Fund.

The Federation is currently undergoing major changes. Since May 2004 we have been a registered charity. With the demise of the Council of Museums in Wales and the formation of CyMAL, Museums, Archives and Libraries Wales, the Federation is the only organisation in the country dedicated purely to supporting with those who work in museums. We already work closely with CyMAL and its officers and we hope to form links with organisations representing librarians and archivists but our primary focus will always be to defend and strengthen the place of museums in Wales' cultural life.
