Crowning Glory for Carnival Queen

For the first time – to mark the 25th anniversary of the Parade – a Carnival Queen was crowned. In July Buckingham held its annual Festival Fortnight with numerous activities taking place every day during the first half of the month. Crowds gathered in Buckingham town centre to witness the final event of the Festival Fortnight and the crowning of the Christmas Carnival Queen. The highlight of the afternoon was the arrival of the Devil’s Horsemen led by renowned stunt rider Daniel Naprous who brought along Dante, the black stallion used in the famous Lloyds Bank TV adverts. Suitably dressed in royal clothing Daniel crowned the carnival Queen, 13 year old Hannah Frank of Buckingham and her attendants – Matron of Honour Chelsea Taylor, 13, of Padbury, and Maids of Honour Holly Cook, nine, of Twyford and Chelsea Markwell, 12, of Buckingham. The Queen and her attendants will lead the Christmas Parade on December 12th in a specially gilded horse drawn carriage provided by the Devils Horsemen. Good crowds watched the ceremony which was a fitting end to the festival fortnight which included a week of classical concerts and recitals followed by a week of rock concerts, comedy and other activities organised by Buckingham Town Council.

 Theme: Christmas Magic

Despite the brutal weather for the second year in succession, everyone we have spoken to deems the 2008 parade, with its theme Christmas Stories, a huge success! Our hearts went out for the small children who turned out on such a horrible morning but it must be said that all those who turned out in the parade deserve medals. The organisations that made the floats and dressed themselves up to fit the theme, the walkers, entries such as the Devil’s Horsemen from Mursley; Bernese Dogs; Air Ambulance; Rocky the Train; Red Cross Ambulance; Fire Engines; Sealed Knot; Six Austin Healey Sprites (thanks to Mike Garton) and Dogs for the Disabled - none of whom get the chance to receive a prize all help to make the parade the success it is. Special thanks, of course, go to the Town Council who sponsor the whole event. Michael Graham Estate Agents paid for the making and erection of all the road signs. The unsung heroes are the thirty five marshals fulfilling the requirements of the police. This was a mammoth task and it is impossible to name them all but they are the backbone of the parade manning road closure points in order to keep routes clear whilst the parade takes place. The police themselves did a superb job and special thanks go to them. The parade wouldn’t happen without the judges – former housemasters of Stowe School, Guy Scott and Lionel Weston, Patrick Fealey of the Buckingham School and Mayor Howard Mordue together with our M.P. John Bercow. The High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire, Peter Thorogood was in attendance for the first time judging and distributing prizes. The commentary provided by Martin Try was once again superb and not forgetting the committee who gave up valuable time meeting on cold winter evenings. Finally thank you to Heron Signs, Phillips Print and Northward Press and Nick Hawes who gave invaluable help.

The hard work that goes on behind the scenes, making of costumes, designing floats etc.long before the big day must be recognised so thank you to all who took part, finally we would like to thank you, the public, for turning out in such vast numbers on such a foul day proving the popularity of the event.

2009 sees our “Grand Silver Jubilee” parade, the 25th, and we hope to make this an extra special occasion. As usual high class bands and cheerleaders are already booked and “The Sealed Knot” is invited again as a result of the enjoyment provided last year. Milton Keynes Dons mascots “Mooey and Donny” will entertain by running into and out of the crowds, Jugglers and Stilt walkers as usual will be prominent plus “The Devil’s Horsemen”,from Mursley, widely acclaimed on films and television will again be a star attraction. As usual Rocky the Train will be present and children between the ages of 5 and 12 are invited to a free ride on him throughout the parade. – Please contact either Rosemary or Steve Heywood on 01280 824404 to book a seat! A mini-fairground will be in the Bullring or, for newcomers, in the square outside Barclays Bank in order to make it a great day for children. There is now a town jester who will make his debut appearance on the day!!!

If any member of the public feels that they could make a worthwhile contribution please contact the organisers. We both look forward to seeing you all later in the year on December 12th.
