Paul Giuffrida

Working in Swansea, Wales, Paul Giuffrida is an artist of Sicilian and Welsh descent whose work reflects his fascination with the fabric of buildings and structures, their materials and their eventual decay. Drawing on his native surroundings of industrial decay in South Wales, his ancestral background of the layered civilisations of the Mediterranean and several years spent travelling and working in India and Australia, Giuffrida creates panels that at first glance appear to be have been ripped from the walls around him.

The work comes into being almost as much through destructive processes (scratching, scoring, tearing, breaking and burning) as much as the creative (painting, sculpting, binding and nailing). Their careful construction and considered, multi-layered textures are collages of personal and inherited memory, containing pasts and secrets that are hinted at but never quite revealed before crumbling away irretrievably. If viewers can typically see their own meaning in artworks, then in Giuffrida's, perhaps, they can see the longue durée of their own histories.

His work can be seen at the Cube Gallery, Bristol, and www.paulgiuffrida.com.
