Pierre Chavignot Born in Algeria and later moving to France, Pierre Chavignot studied in Paris at the École des beaux-arts. He now lives and works in Nice. Chavignot's preferred medium is etching. He often densely covers the plate with an image and, after printing a series, reworks the surface repeatedly, almost to the point of obliteration. His acute observations of human gestures are sometimes almost obscured by a sense of imprisonment and a struggle against chaos. His figurative work recalls the architectural forms of Braque and his more tangled and claustrophobic plates also remind one of constructivist landscapes. The influence of the trapped and tortured subjects of Francis Bacon is also clear. |
