Karen Edwards Karen Edwards was born in Lambeth, London in 1961 and obtained a First Class degree in Fine Art from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. During her studies she was awarded three separate prizes and scholarships. After travelling extensively in Africa and the east Asia, Edwards has now settled in the west of England. Her work is inspired by her surroundings, particularly the city of Bristol and the coast of Cornwall, between which she divides her time. Her work has been shown frequently at both the Royal Academy, London and the Royal West of England Academy, to which she was elected a member in 2004. Her works are almost impressionistic, recalling perhaps the Seine valley and south Wales beach paintings of Alfred Sisley and the Normandy coasts depicted by Eugene Boudin. Like them, Edwards demonstrates a control of the weather in her paintings, capturing the mood and light of torrential rainstorms, hazy seaside sunshine and the end of the day. It is her mastering of both the sunlight of Cornish memories and the constant precipitation characterising Bristol that brings her pictures so fully to life. More of her work can be seen at the Cube Gallery, Bristol. |
