Julie Ayton

Originally trained at Farnham, graduating in 1981, Julie Ayton produces hand-thrown porcelain and stoneware. Having worked as a ceramics teacher, she now runs St.Edmunds Pottery at Salisbury Arts Centre.

Julie’s stoneware is boldly decorated. The glazes used are solid and yet never obscure the texture of the ceramics. The pieces are both functional in the domestic environment and confident enough to stand as art works. Her porcelain has a similar strength, although in form it is altogether softer and more refined. The feelings invoked by the pieces are pastel shaded, yet the colours of the glazes can range from sharp greens to cotton wool-soft whites.
