Clare Crouchman

Clare Crouchman creates two-dimensional ceramic wall pieces using a variety of clays, glazes and techniques.

Her inlaid designs, enriched with stone coloured glazes and oxides, show her mastery of the medium as she fires many different clays together without them detaching from each other. With the scoring, painting and positioning, the result is one of abstract designs that uniquely reflect both a modern, urban environment (street plans, buildings, traffic) and the flowing yet ordered, repeated patterns of nature (cell structures, microscopic organisms, rock strata).

After studying traditional techniques in Japan in the early 1990s, Crouchman returned to Britain and studied for an MA in ceramics under Jeff Swindle at University of Wales Cardiff. Since then she has gone on to hold exhibition across Britain and also in Japan. She is represented in many private and public collections.

Crouchman is based near Cambridge, England.
